hauMĀNA
hauMĀNA is the student hui of MANA at UH Mānoa. What better way to call attention to the fact that the University sits on “Ceded lands”? This hui is devoted to projects, scholarship and celebrations that challenge the ivory tower’s control of what knowledges are dissemenated throughout the academy. Wanna start one at your school? Do it!
FILM PROJECT
(Funded by the Student Equity, Excellence & Diversity Office at UH)
hauMĀNA, the Student Hui is currently engaged in a film project that explores the look of the sovereignty movement today as a practitioner-based movement. It brings to light the MANA platform through on site work days and interviews that seek to explore the following questions:
* What does a free and active Hawaiian Nation look like to you?
* How do you relate your work to Hawaiian Independence?
* How does the U.S. occupation of Hawai’i impede on the purpose of your work?
* Are there ideals that you are not able to actualize because of barriers presented by occupation and if so what are they?
* How have you overcome these barriers?
* Do you have recommendations for others confronting similar challenges?
* What, if any, liberation movements in Hawai’i or around the world, past or present, inspire your views, work and ideas toward independence and nationhood?
Estimated completion - Summer 2011
